Mayor McGinn terminates SPD drone program

Mayor Mike McGinn released a statement Thursday afternoon regarding the Seattle Police Department’s plan to use drones as a law enforcement tool.

SEATTLE — "Today I spoke with Seattle Police Chief John Diaz and we agreed that it was time to end the unmanned aerial vehicle program, so that SPD can focus its resources on public safety and the community-building work that is the department's priority. The vehicles will be returned to the vendor," said McGinn.

On Wednesday, citizens spoke out against the Seattle Police Department's drone program.

The police department wanted to be able to use the unmanned aircraft in various situations such as police standoffs.
