Man, woman struck by vehicle at Walmart in Covington

COVINGTON, Wash. — A man and woman were hit by an SUV Thursday night in the parking lot of a store in Covington, said the King County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident happened around 8:30 p.m. at the Walmart at 17432 southeast 270th Place.

Investigators said a driver in a red SUV accelerated before he struck a man and woman. The woman was pinned under the car and the man was thrown on top of the car.

According to the Sheriff’s Office the driver was driving under the influence when he hit the gas and crashed into the couple leaving the store.

Other shoppers rushed to the victims to help.

The woman was taken to Harborview Medical Center with head and pelvic injuries and is in serious condition. The man’s head was injured and he is in good condition.

When officers arrived, they arrested the driver on suspicion of driving under the influence and vehicular assault.

“We do suspect alcohol. They smelled it. There was behavior that was alcohol impairment,” said Sgt. Cindi West of the King County Sheriff’s Office..

KIRO 7 Eyewitness reporter Alison Grande spoke with Madeline Havener, an employee at Walmart, about the incident.

“So it’s very unfortunate. We wish them a good recovery,” said Havener.

The driver will be booked into the King County Jail.
