Man with large kitchen knife at shoe store taken into custody

A man with a large knife inside of a downtown Seattle shoe store was taken into custody Tuesday morning, police said.

SEATTLE — At about 10:30 a.m., a man walked into the Payless Shoe Source store on Third Avenue and Pine Street.

Authorities said the armed man ordered employees and customers out of the store, and that the issue was between him and the police.

When police arrived, they started negotiating with the man and after about 20 minutes, officers convinced the man to put his knife down.

Traffic on Third Avenue was temporarily shut down between Pike and Pine streets while police were speaking to the man.

The 67-year-old man was taken into custody and he was taken to Harborview Medical Center to be evaluated.

There were no injuries during the incident.
