Man dies after being struck by train

SEATTLE — A 33-year-old man died from his injuries Saturday after he was hit by a freight train in a tunnel north of King Street Station, said the Seattle Police Department.

According to police, the incident happened around 4:30 a.m. in the tunnel north of the 300 block of South Jackson Street.

Police said during an investigation, the man was hit by a northbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train about midway in the tunnel.

Crews responded to the scene and medics took the man to Harborview Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

He died Saturday afternoon from his injuries.

It is unknown at this time why the man was on the tracks and how he got in the tunnel as the gates to the station were locked.

The police department’s Traffic Collision Investigation Squad detectives will continue to investigate the incident.
