Woodland Park Zoo welcomed their newest snow leopard cub on July 6. On Friday, they announced the baby completed her first veterinary exam Thursday.
The cub currently weighs 2.6 pounds. Since cubs don't fully open their eyes until they're around two weeks old, the new cub currently has one eyelid that remains closed.
The cub’s parents Helen and Dhirin were matched under the Snow Leopard Species Survival Plan, a cooperative conservation breeding program across accredited zoos. Helen has lived at Woodland Park Zoo since 2008 and Dhirin arrived from Oklahoma City Zoo in 2014.
It will be several weeks before the baby is ready to be outdoors. In the meantime, Dhirin will be out in the snow leopard exhibit while mom and baby are in their den to allow bonding and proper nursing.
The cub will be with her mom in the outdoor, on-view exhibit in late September.
