“I'm in shock. I’ve never been through anything like this,” said Bly-Olsen.

Bly-Olsen just happened to be awake around 12:30 this morning.

“I heard an alarm, which I thought was my son's car alarm, and ran out to see if I could see who was tampering with his truck and instantly saw flames and called 911,” she explained.

She even tried to rescue her 88-year-old neighbor, who lived alone.

“We attempted to get in the back door, but it was locked, knocking on the windows. We weren't getting any indication there was any movement inside,” she recounted.

South Snohomish County firefighters found the woman, who was unconscious when they brought her out of the burning home. They performed CPR, but couldn't revive her and she died at the scene.

“She was really sweet. My husband and I were kind of looking out after her. We'd bring her random meals, just sit and chat with her, take out her garbage, if she had any issues with the house. She was kind of like a member of the family,” Bly-Olsen said.

Most of the fire was contained to the back of the house - in the bedroom and bathroom - but there is heavy smoke damage throughout the home. It's unknown how the fire started, or whether the homeowner had working smoke detectors in the home. They’re answers Bly-Olsen wants to know, too.

“You always worry about that because you can prepare for your own house. Because God forbid something happens and just to ensure the safety of your family. But yes, we'd like to know so we can have a community meeting and just update everybody because we all look out for each other here,” Bly-Olsen added.

Bly-Olsen said her neighbor's dog also died in the fire.

Officials say a South Snohomish County firefighter sustained a minor injury.
