Woman, 6-year-old daughter killed in head-on crash in Whatcom County

EVERSON, Wash. — A woman and her 6-year-old daughter were killed in a head-on crash near Everson in Whatcom County, the Washington State Patrol said.

The woman's 7-year-old boy was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bellingham in serious condition and then airlifted to Harborview Medical Center.

As of Friday afternoon, the boy is in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

Police said a Honda crossed the center line in the 1900 block of East Pole Road and hit a dump truck head-on Friday morning.

The driver of the Honda, a 29-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene, the Bellingham Herald reported.

Her daughter was transported to St. Joseph’s where she later died from her injuries.

Both children were in the back seat of the Honda in booster seats.

A neighbor told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News North Sound reporter Lee Stoll that the mother may have taking her children to child care.

A trooper said it's not clear whether she was distracted, texting or fell asleep at the wheel.

The driver of the dump truck was taken to the hospital as a precaution.
