Woman arrested in arson at own Bremerton home

BREMERTON, Wash. — A 21-year-old woman was arrested in connection with a Thanksgiving Day fire deemed to be arson at the Bremerton home she shared with her husband.

Bremerton police and fire were called to a report of a house fire in the 1500 block of Perry Avenue at 2:58 a.m. on Thursday.

Police officers arrived to find the 21-year-old resident of the home outside, singed and blackened with soot.

The woman told officers she was the only one home, but her dog was still inside.

The home next door was becoming involved in flames as the fire spread, and at 3:04 a.m., Bremerton police officers went to the home next door and evacuated four people. Firefighters arrived and kept the damage to the home next door to a minimum.

The woman provided preliminary information to Bremerton fire and police Investigators and was later taken to Harrison Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Based on her statements and the circumstances of the fire, investigators obtained a search to obtain evidence from the scene. The 21-year-old resident was questioned by detectives.

Investigators said preliminary information indicates that the woman had been drinking and her husband was out of the home at work overnight.

She told officers she used a knife to split open the couch and then used a propane torch to light the it on fire.

She said she could not control the rapidly spreading fire and the entire house subsequently burned.

Officers contacted the husband, who came to the scene a few hours after the start of the fire.

Firefighters later confirmed that the couple's dog died in the fire.

The woman was jailed for investigation of second-degree felony arson with bail set at $100,000.

She has posted bail and will appear in court Monday.
