SEATTLE — With the Powerball jackpot swelling to more than $700 million for its Wednesday night drawing – a payout that could be possibly the second largest in the nation – players are turning to grocery store and convenient market counters for a chance to win.

The lottery program in Washington state released a list of nearly 50 stores last year that have sold tickets with “big wins.” Washington’s Lottery defines a “lucky store” as one that sells the most prizes worth more than $1,000 within in a year’s time.

Take a look at the interactive map below to see if any of these “lucky stores” are near your neighborhood, and click on a point in the map to read the address of the store and its number of “big wins.” Scroll down to read about your odds of winning.

The odds of you wining the drawing are one in 292. 2 million. That’s about the same luck of flipping a quarter and getting heads 28 times in a row.

Players have much better odds of one in 25 of winning a lesser prize. Those odds range from one in 11.7 million of winning $1 million for matching the five regular balls to one in 38 for matching the Powerball and winning $4

If you’re planning on playing despite these long odds, here’s what to know:

  • How much does it cost to play in Washington state? $2
  • How do I play again? Pick five numbers between 1 and 69 and one Powerball number between 1 and 26.
  • When is the drawing? 7:59 PST.
  • What if I only match some numbers? If you only match some numbers, you may qualify for a lesser prize
  • What's the annuity amount? The jackpot is listed as $700 million, but that refers to the annuity option, doled out in 30 payments over 29 years.
  • How about the cash option?  Nearly all winners favor the cash option, which pays significantly less. For the current jackpot, the cash prize would be $443.3 million.
  • Why is the jackpot so big? Wednesday's jackpot grew after it rolled over 20 times without any winners from June. The jackpot is second only to a $1.6 billion prize won in January 2016.

Powerball is played in 44 states, as well as Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

With all the talk about sudden wealth, it’s easy to forget that the purpose of Powerball is to raise money for government programs. In Washington state, proceeds benefit the Washington Opportunity Pathways Account, which is a program providing grants to college students statewide.
