SEATTLE — Crews working on the Seattle tunnel moved north to finish building the final 3,000 feet of roadway for what will become the northbound lanes when the project is complete.
Seattle Tunnel Partners built the first 6,000 feet of the tunnel’s lower roadway by hauling panels from the south end of the tunnel to an area roughly underneath Virginia Street and First Avenue.
The tunnel’s upper roadway, which will be used for southbound traffic, was built pouring concrete.
The video above shows the roadway coming together.
The tunnel’s opening date was pushed up to fall 2018 last week.
“Our goal is to safely open the tunnel to traffic as quickly as possible and begin removing the Alaskan Way Viaduct, but it’s too early to accurately predict a tunnel opening date. Safety and quality remain our top priorities, and will continue to guide all work on the program,” the Washington State Department of Transportation said in a statement.
