Washington State Ferry Officials are reminding passengers to not drink and drive during the New Year’s holidays.
"Almost every year, we have an incident on New Year’s Eve or early New Year’s morning of somebody visibly intoxicated either causing trouble on board or driving under the influence of alcohol," Washington State Ferry’s Justin Fujioka told KIRO 7’s Joanna Small.
Fujioka said in the last three years, ferry officials have dealt with a drunken driver in line at Fauntleroy, an assault of a worker aboard the Puyallup and visibly intoxicated women stripping during a sailing from Seattle to Bainbridge.
"We will have an increased presence here at the terminals and throughout our Washington state ferry system on new years eve and into new years day," Fujioka said.
Washington State Troopers are always at the ferry docks - walking with explosive sniffing dogs - but on New Year's Eve there will be a trooper onboard every ferry.
The hope is the increased presence will deter criminal incidents that can ruin the trip for everyone.
