Warning labels now required on all pot edibles in state

SEATTLE — Starting Tuesday, a warning label will be required on every marijuana edible product sold in Washington State.

The State Liquor and Cannabis Board had been considering the idea for some time.

When edibles first hit the market, the board required all packaging had to be approved by the state before it could be sold.

The idea was to keep products from being packaged in an alluring way to people under 21.

That prompted some manufacturers to go with a simplistic style of packaging, but others still had packaging that may have been more appealing to children.

Eventually, the Liquor and Cannabis Board decided that all edible marijuana products would have to incorporate a warning label.

That label has a red hand and the warning “NOT FOR KIDS.” It also includes an emergency number for the Washington Poison Center.

Safety experts say the label will help parents teach children the pot edibles are off limits.

It also serves as a reminder for parents to keep those kinds of products out of reach.

Manufacturers will have to incorporate the label into their packaging or put a sticker on the product package.
