Two teens killed in Edmonds crash, three others hurt

EDMONDS, Wash. — Chance Larreau was not standing far from the scene of a horrific crash that killed two teens Friday night.

"There (are) really (no) words to express this kind of situation," he said.

Edmonds police say five teens, ages 13-16, were driving on Olympic View Drive between 180th and Andover just before midnight Friday.

The accident claimed the lives of Zach Langer and Noah Vires, both 16. The three other teens, ranging in age from 13 to 16, were hurt, two critically.

"Wow, that's terrible," Ross Lumley said. At the time, he wasn't sure whether Langer, whom he described as his best friend, was one of the victims.

But he was already feeling the pain.

"It's not a good day at all," Lumley said. "This is crazy."

According to Edmonds police, Langer was driving at about 11:30 p.m. when the car veered off the road and slammed into a tree.

"There was ruts right in here," Brett Tugby said, as he pointed to the shoulder.

Tugby said he heard the sirens and rushed to the scene. He took cellphone pictures of the desperate effort to rescue the teenagers.

"There was some young people, right here where we're standing," he said. "And the one girl was sitting down, blood on her face. And she was real hysterical, trying to call her parents.  And (I) tried to comfort her, then watched as they extracted others."

Tugby said it was difficult to remove the bodies from the vehicle.

"Very hard," he said.

Edmonds police say they are still trying to piece together all the facts of the accident.

"At this point, we have no indication that alcohol or drugs played a factor," said Sgt. Shane Hawley. "But definitely speed."

The accident is providing a sobering lesson for the teens who admit they, too, love to speed.

Relatives of Vires said they are hurting, especially since an uncle of his died exactly a month ago. In reaching out to the Langer's family, his grandmother said, "Please leave us alone in our grief."
