Two JBLM soldiers die in boating incident on American Lake

LAKEWOOD, Wash. — Two Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldiers died in a boating incident on American Lake Tuesday, according to a spokesperson with JBLM.

Pvt. Jamanni Gibson, 21, of West Peoria, Illinois, and Pvt. Jacques Means, 22, of Killeen, Texas were recovered at American Lake by Joint Base Lewis-McChord emergency personnel, military personnel said.

"Our deepest condolences go out to the Soldiers' families," said Maj. Gen. Willard Burleson III, the 7th Inf. Div. commanding general. "The entirety of the 7th Infantry Division mourns the loss of these Soldiers and honors their service to the nation," JBLM said in a statement.

JBLM says Pvt. Gibson enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2017, and served since December 2017 as a petroleum specialist in 23rd Brigade Engineer Battalion, 1-SBCT, 7th Inf. Div.

Pvt. Means also enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2017, and served since December 2017 as a petroleum specialist in 23rd Bridgade Engineer Battalion, 1-2 SBCT, 7th Inf. Div., according to JBLM.

The circumstances surrounding the deaths are under investigation. KIRO 7 will continue to update this post as more information becomes available.
