Trump confirms Everett visit, despite big Clinton lead in Washington state

EVERETT, Wash. — When we caught up with Bruno Kelpas, the King County Trump co-chair was surveying Everett's Xfinity Arena for Tuesday's Trump Rally.

Asked how many people he expected, Kelpas responded, “We’re looking at 10,000, we feel like we could fill in the building, that should not be a problem.”

Thousands turned out to see Donald Trump when he visited Lynden in May.

But the recent Elway Poll has Hillary Clinton ahead by 19 points in Washington State, and Washington hasn't voted for a Republican presidential nominee since 1984.

Still, Trump may have overridden his advisors to make the return to Washington he promised.

“Not at all, not at all," Kelpas said, when asked if Trump’s trip to Everett is a waste of time. “From the top of the ticket, all the way on down to legislative district level, gubernatorial, we could turn this state red.”

Bill Phillips scoffs at that. He was a Democratic delegate to the national convention.

“I don't think any campaigner is every wasting his time when they campaign, but at the same time, if he thinks he's going to find victory in Snohomish county, it's not there,” Phillips said.

Our camera captured Everett Police and other law enforcement agencies making their initial security survey of the Xfinity Arena. They know that violence has broken out at some Trump rallies in other states.

“You know, it is a concern, and that's one thing that in our planning process that we're going to be working with other agencies for,” said Aaron Snell, Everett Police Spokesman.

Because the rally begins at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Snell says police are working on details of a travel plan for city streets and I-5. He says details will likely be released Sunday or Monday.
