Thurston County applies for Phase 2 of reopening

THURSTON COUNTY, Wash. — Tuesday, the Thurston County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to submit an application to move to phase 2 of the state’s “Safe Start” reopening plan.

The application for a variance was sent to the state's secretary of health.

“We’ve been able to really slow the spread of the COVID virus, to the point where we’re allowed to put in for variance,” said Thurston County Commissioner John Hutchings.

If approved, a lot more businesses in Thurston County will be allowed to open back up, such as Fleshworks Tattoo.

“We’re ready. We’re ready any day that they give us the go-ahead; we’re ready to open that same day,” said owner Travis Brown.

Fleshworks Tattoo has a long list of appointments.

It is preparing for the new safety standards now. Inside the shop, there are boxes filled with masks, gowns and other personal protective equipment.

“We’re going to be taking their temperature. We’re going to be making sure they wear masks, gowns. I mean, it’s going to be all that,” said owner Cynthia Brown.

Under phase 2, hair and nail salons, dog groomers and retail stores can also reopen, but with restrictions.

Restaurants can open but are only allowed to seat up to 50% capacity. At the Oyster House, they’ve already marked tables with giant X’s.

“We’re very excited. We need to get the ball rolling on that as soon as we can, try to get back to some normalcy as best as possible within the confines of safety, of course,” said Brandon Lawin, regional manager.

Tables inside the Oyster House are spaced out, sanitizer is placed out and workers have face masks that are embellished with the restaurant’s name.

“We basically are going by the strictest guidelines we can find and implementing some of our own as well,” said Lawin.

An official phase 2 reopening date will be announced once the state approves Thurston County’s application. County leaders hope the answer comes this week.
