Tacoma police searching for gun after man says he threw it on grass near elementary school

TACOMA, Wash. — Tacoma police are searching for a missing handgun after a man said he threw one or two onto the grass near an elementary school.

Police said they responded to the report of an armed man on school property Thursday.

The man was taken into custody and no weapon was found on him.

He told police he had “thrown the gun(s) in the grass on a nearby yard.”

The man was not able to tell police exactly where he threw them.

Witnesses told police he had two guns in his hands when crossing the school grounds. Officers searched the area around Boze Elementary School at 1140 E. 65th Street in Tacoma and also nearby homes but were not able to locate the guns.

Tacoma police are telling residents in the area that a handgun may have been discarded in a yard nearby and ask all residents to check their properties where the gun(s) may be hidden.

If a gun is located, call 911 to have officers respond to recover it.

Police would like to stress the gun(s) may be loaded and the safety of children in the neighborhood could be at risk.
