Suspect killed by Pierce County police Friday night

PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. — A man was killed by Pierce County police Friday night in an officer-involved shooting in the Elk Plain area.

Police with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office said they were responding to a 911 report made around 9:30 p.m. by a woman who said her friend was having a mental breakdown in the roadway.

The woman then told police her friend had a knife. A dispatcher heard her say, “Let go of me now," and “Stop it.”

A second person called 911 to report a man matching the earlier reported man’s description, who attempted to enter the caller’s car.

The original 911 caller confirmed to police her friend was trying to “jump into other peoples’ vehicles.”

A responding officer, when they arrived, radioed in that shots were fired.

Police said the suspect refused multiple commands from the responding deputy at gunpoint and then entered the patrol vehicle, at which point the deputy shot at the suspect.

The suspect, an approximately 28-year-old man from Spanaway, was killed, police say.

Police said the responding deputy was not injured. An investigation will be conducted.
