Stranger accused of punching woman after demanding to know her immigration status

BELLEVUE, Wash. — A 27-year-old Renton man was charged with second degree-assault in King County Superior Court after prosecutors said he punched a woman in Bellevue.

The assault is alleged to have happened around 2 a.m. on Nov. 10.

In charging documents, prosecutors said Akmal Gabdulkhakov approached the woman and began questioning her about her ethnicity and naturalization status.

"The victim was offended by such questions from a total stranger and spontaneously reacted by slapping the defendant," prosecutors wrote in charging documents.

Officials said the woman was restrained by two individuals and any potential threat was nullified.

However, Gabdulkhakov "stood up, spread his feet apart into an athletic stance, reached his hand behind him, and swung his hand hitting the female in the face as she was being held down," police wrote in a probable cause document.

Prosecutors said the woman was treated at a local hospital and suffered three fractures to her nose.

When police arrived on scene, they said Gabdulkhakov initially denied making any harassing statements, before later admitting it.

"The defendant also stated that ‘maybe next time she'll think twice before hitting a man,'" prosecutors said.

Gabdulkhakov was later booked into the King County Jail where he remains in lieu of $75,000 bail.

Prosecutors said that despite Gabdulkhakov's lack of criminal history, he "poses a danger to our community" in their request for $75,000 bail.

Gabdulkhakov' arraignment, where he will enter a plea, is expected later this year.
