Suspect taken into custody, ending standoff at North Seattle apartment

SEATTLE — After an hours-long standoff at a North Seattle apartment complex, a 45-year-old man was taken into custody by Seattle police at 11:40 a.m. Wednesday.

The standoff started when residents called 911 shortly after 4:30 a.m. to report a domestic violence disturbance in the 13700 block of Midvale Avenue North, police said.

Arriving officers noticed the man assaulting a woman with a baseball bat in a third-floor unit, the Seattle Police Department said. Police said they could not get to the woman because the man had barricaded the door and the windows had exterior bars on them.

Police said the man drilled screws into the front door.

The woman eventually managed to escape the apartment by running to another room, where SWAT officers got her out by cutting the bars on the window, police reported. A Seattle fire and medic crew evaluated her and determined she was OK.

Residents in the building were evacuated and put on a Metro bus for safety.

Negotiators tried to talk to the man, but he refused to talk with officers, police said.

SWAT officers did not say how they got to the man who, was able to access an attic area, but they were able to arrest him. He will be booked into the King County Jail for felony domestic violence assault.

The incident is being investigated.
