Former U.S. attorney General Jenny Durkan will announce her bid for Seattle's next mayor Friday.

Durkan, who earned her law degree from the University of Washington School of Law, served as U.S. attorney for the Western District of Washington under President Obama from 2009 through September 2014.

Some believe her efforts in the area of police accountability and civil rights best define her time as a U.S. attorney.

A news release sent Thursday say she will officially announce her campaign for mayor of Seattle on Friday on Beacon Hill.

Active campaigns listed by the Seattle Ethics and Elections Commission name 11 candidates in the race: Casey Carlisle, Michael Harris, David Ishii, Harley Lever, Mary Juanita Martin, Michael McGinn, Cary Moon, Nikkita Oliver, Jason Roberts, Alex Tsimerman, and Keith Whiteman. State Sen. Bob Hasewaga is not yet listed, but he entered the race this week.

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray announced Tuesday he would not seek re-election amid his sex abuse scandal.
