US 2 in Monroe reopens after double fatality collision

MONROE, Wash. — Highway 2 in Monroe reopened Thursday night after it was closed around 1 p.m. due to a fatal collision involving a dump truck and an SUV.

The road was closed at Fern Bluff and Highway 2 in Sultan, and Old Owen and Highway 2 in Monroe.

Chopper 7 flew over the scene, showing just how horrific the crash was.

“We arrive on scene and troopers see (that it’s) two cars and it’s a head-on and there’s significant damage to the vehicles. It’s definitely something where your heart sinks because you know that sometimes these aren’t the collisions where not everyone is going to be OK. And in this case, it is a double fatality. No one wants to go to a scene like that and our hearts always go out to the families involved in this type of situation,” Washington State Patrol Trooper Kelsey Harding said.

Troopers said the driver of the SUV crossed over the center line and that it was a head-on crash.

Both people inside the SUV were killed but their identities were not released.

It is still not clear what caused the SUV to cross the center line into oncoming traffic.

The crash remains under investigation.
