Sequim man critically injured while defending his family in Mexico

A Sequim man had to be airlifted to a San Diego hospital from Mexico after he was pulled into a car and dragged down a road during a confrontation in Cabo San Lucas.

Willy Rookard and his wife, Christy, were celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary, in Cabo San Lucas with 10 members of their extended family, and friends from Sequim.

On the second night of the trip, the group was confronted by two men in a silver car who pulled up to them on a crowded street.

"They pulled over right near the curb," said Christy Rookard. "They rolled down their window and in English, they asked us where we were going,"

She said the pair in the car returned several times.

"I didn't know what their plan was and I started to get scared," said their daughter, Alexis Rookard.

Christy Rookard said Rookard became agitated when he heard the men talk about the women in his group.

The men drove off and then returned minutes later.

Christy Rookard said Rookard began arguing with the men. She saw her husband's arms being pulled into the passenger window as the car sped away, dragging Rookard down the road.

"When they let him loose he fell like a limp doll and dropped to the pavement. He was unconscious and there was blood everywhere, from we didn't know where," said Christy Rookard.

Rookard was airlifted to a trauma center in San Diego, with a collapsed lung and a severe brain injury.

Rookard's family doesn't know when he will be able to return home. They say he's able to respond to questions, but they wonder if he will be able to make a full recovery.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help with international airlift and medical expenses.
