Seattle, Uber teaming up to cut New Year's drunken driving

SEATTLE — The City of Seattle and Uber are teaming up to cut down on New Year's Eve drunken driving, as 2016 may be recorded as the deadliest year for drunken driving deaths.

Uber is offering discounts on some rides in the hopes that people going to and from bars celebrating the New Year use the service instead of getting behind the wheel.

Last year, state troopers arrested more than 1,200 people between Thanksgiving and New Year’s during emphasis patrols.

Nationally, this year statistically could be recorded as the deadliest overall with an average 28 people a day killed in DUI crashes.

"We're seeing these increases that we have not seen in 50 years. It's tragic,” said Mark Rosekind with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In an effect to curb more drunken driving fatalities, Uber and the City of Seattle are teaming up by offering

$10 off Uber Pool trips by using the code SAFESTART2017 on the Uber app on rides between 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec 31 and 5 a.m. on New Year’s Day.

They're hoping everyone has a safe and sane New Year's by taking advantage of these rides.
