LACEY, Wash. — All SB lanes of I-5 near Mounts Road in Pierce County are blocked following the Amtrak train derailment that killed at least three people, and injured at least 70 others Monday morning.
The Washington State Department of Transportation is advising drivers who have to go southbound on I-5 to use alternate routes. WSDOT says 60,000 drivers use the area of I-5 each day.
WSDOT officials say the area of I-5 will be closed for the rest of Monday, and that drivers should prepare for a multi-day closure.
Here are the best alternate routes to take according to WSDOT and KIRO 7's RealTime traffic team:
We're suggesting this as an alt route as SRs 7, 507 are jammed with traffic.

If you go SR 7, 507 expect hours upon hours of delays. https://t.co/Zb76FYvzZ8
Again your best alternate around the closure of SB I-5 in Dupont: EXIT I-5 AT HWY 16 THROUGH GIG HARBOR TO PORT ORCHARD, EXIT TO HWY 3, HEAD SOUTH TO SHELTON, EXIT HWY 101 TO OLYMPIA TO I-5 @KIRO7Seattle pic.twitter.com/kV2QfQKYou

Ok guys!! This back up is slammed in SR 507. This little road cant handle all this diversion for the closure of SB 5. Try using WB 16 thru Shelton to Olympia! pic.twitter.com/jS5ta5jHzs
