SEATTLE — The national games for the Special Olympics are coming to Seattle in July 2018, bringing thousands of people and millions of dollars in economic impact.
On Thursday, organizers officially announced the University of Washington, as well as other regional venues including in Federal Way, will play host to 3,500 athletes, 10,000 volunteers, 10,000 families, coaches and delegates, and 50,000 fans.
They estimate the economic impact of the 2018 Special Olympics USA Games will be $50 million.
Organizers say it will be Seattle's largest sporting event since the Goodwill Games in 1990.
Athletes and coaches will stay at the University of Washington, making up what officials say will be the largest group ever hosted on campus.
Special Olympics athletes were among those at the announcement.
"I've been doing this for 24 years, I've never dreamed of this. This is just amazing," said athlete William Nelson.
Stacey Johnston, an athlete and board member for the games, said, "it gives a place for people with intellectual disabilities to strive for their best and be who they are."
Governor Jay Inslee said, "Washington State is perfect for the USA Games. We are a state of inclusion."
