Seattle Humane to take in pets from Hawaii after disastrous flooding on Kauai

Among the pets transferred will be 5 Hound mix puppies.

BELLEVUE, Wash. — Seattle Humane is prepared to take in as many as 25 pets from Kauai Humane Society after flooding and landslides left families and their pets stranded.

The effort is to help relieve overcrowding at the Kauai shelter to make space for displaced pets or pets in need of temporary housing after the storm as Hawaii rescuers airlift residents to off-island evacuation shelters.

Seattle Humane will not take in pets separated from their owners in the disaster.

The pets will arrive at Sea-Tac Airport at 10 p.m. Thursday.  The Seattle Humane team will transport the group of kittens, puppies, cats and dogs to the shelter in Bellevue where they will be placed for adoption.

The organization is asking for donations to help pay for the transfer of adoptable shelter pets off the island into new homes. Seattle Humane said for every $1,500 raised, it can bring up to 25 pets to the shelter through their Life-Saver Rescue Program.

Monetary donations can be made through the Life-Saver Rescue Program fund.

Seattle Humane's Life-Saver Rescue team is still bringing in dozens of pets weekly from overcrowded shelters in Washington and beyond, where they've run out of space or resources including Puyallup, Olympia Yakima, and Grant County.
