Report: Second Amazon headquarters may not be in Northwest

SEATTLE — A report from GeekWire says the second Amazon headquarters likely won't be in the Northwest.

Amazon top executive Jeff Wilke broke the news during a summit Tuesday, according to the GeekWire report.

“Not everybody wants to live in the Northwest,” Wilke said, according to GeekWire. “It’s been terrific for me and my family, but I think we may find another location allows us to recruit a different collection of employees.”

Amazon clarified the comments Wednesday, sending GeekWire a statement that read, "We will give serious consideration to every HQ2 proposal we receive from across North America, including from communities across the Pacific Northwest.”

Cities across North America have sprung to meet Amazon’s call for a second headquarters equal to its Seattle base. The shopping giant’s home region has tried to entice the company to keep it local.

Snohomish and King Counties are offering up their collective regions, along with the Tulalip Tribes. Cities include: Arlington; Marysville; Bellevue; Bothell; Everett; Kenmore; Renton; Lynnwood; and Tukwila.

“Amazon’s announcement was the call to action we need to do our best work, to put aside parochial interests and small thinking and do what is right for workers and employers across the region and state,” King County Executive Dow Constantine said.

Pierce County is also trying to woo Amazon to build its second headquarters there.
