Renton residents fight back against would-be burglars

RENTON, Wash. — A Renton neighborhood has had it with prowlers and would-be burglars.

They say people are trying to break in to their homes while they're hard at work.

Now, one couple is fighting back, posting images of the prowlers right on the garage window to warn the would-be burglars that they're watching.

"I put the pictures up there because I'm pissed off, "said homeowner Jessica Roach. "I'm tired of this."

Roach says on Wednesday at 2 p.m. a man tried to open the door to her garage and the gate to her backyard. He’s also seen peering in the window.

“I don’t want to be a victim. I don’t want my property broken into.”

Members of the North Downtown Renton neighborhood say they’re also tired of being victimized.

Diane Dobson says her family members have had their vehicles broken into eight or nine times in the last year. Her daughter’s car was burglarized Thursday night.

"It's horrible feeling like a victim," Dobson said. "Your criminal behavior is not welcome here."

Neighbors are sharing information through the social-media site "Nextdoor.” They're posting pictures and letting other neighbors know what's going on. They are also meeting each other now face to face.

"We're taking our neighborhood back," said Jeff Roach.

Neighbors would like Renton Police to step up patrols of the neighborhood.

Renton Police told KIRO 7 residents should keep calling 911 and sharing their surveillance videos of suspicious activity with police.  He said it is possible the subject in the video could be responsible for other crimes in the area.

Jessica Roach hopes her approach of posting the pictures and warning on her window will help.

“I printed them out and put them on here because if this guy comes back, and any of their friends come back, they’ll know we’re watching them,” said Jessica Roach.
