Protester arrested at Congressman Jim McDermott's Seattle office

Five protesters occupied Congressman Jim McDermott’s office Thursday afternoon in downtown Seattle, and one was arrested for trespassing.

Reports on Twitter indicate that the protesters supported Bernie Sanders, and that they wanted to talk to McDermott about his superdelegate endorsement.

Seattle Police Department spokesman Mark Jamieson told KIRO 7 that the protesters demanded the staff call McDermott.

McDermott, who has backed Hillary Clinton, was not there. Security was called.

An initial police report of the incident did not say who the protesters were affiliated with, and McDermott’s staff in Seattle directed questions to a spokesman in the Washington D.C. office. Messages were not immediately returned. This story will be updated if additional details are available from McDermott’s office.

McDermott, serving Washington State's 7th Congressional District, made headlines nationally for traveling to Iraq in the run-up to the 2003 conflict and saying that President George W. Bush would mislead Americans to win their support for the war.

The congressman announced in January that he would retire.
