On LGBT Americans, GOP platform more conservative than Trump

Presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump can be more liberal than his party when it comes to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues.

He's spoken out against anti-gay discrimination.

But when the Republican Platform Committee met this week, it rejected a move to just acknowledge LGBT discrimination in the platform.

Washington State Republican Chairman Susan Hutchison is not on the platform committee, but she knows how it works.

"Everybody pleads their case for whatever items they want in the platform and then majority rules when it comes to those decisions," she told us from Cleveland.

The New York Times reports Trump will likely end up running with a Republican platform that restricts the bathrooms that can be used by transgender people.

And it reinforces the party's opposition to same-sex marriage, even though the U. S. Supreme Court has legalized it.

"As far as the issues -- the social issues -- I know they are of great interest to a lot of people. I doubt that this platform will be much different from years past," she said.

More moderate Republicans will get another shot at platform changes on the convention floor next week.

The platform is more in line with Trump when it comes to issues such as the economy and foreign policy.

Ironically, the City of Cleveland today has affirmed that discrimination against transgender people will not be allowed.
