New bill would require seat belts, safety cameras on school buses

School bus safety will be the focus of a hearing at the State Capitol Tuesday.

Lawmakers will be discussing a bill that could bring big changes for school buses across the state.

If House Bill 1246 passes, school districts across the state will be required to make safety changes to their buses, including installing new safety cameras on every bus.

It would also require every school bus manufactured or assembled after September 1, 2018, to be equipped with a safety belt for every passenger.

Every school district will also have to create a bus safety account that will help make sure every bus and bus driver is held accountable while on the road.

Washington is one of a dozen states considering similar legislation.

Tuesday’s hearing is set for 1:30 p.m.
