WASHINGTON D.C. — U.S. Congressman Mark Walker, a republican from North Carolina, released a statement Saturday on his refusal to accept a salary during the government shutdown.

Walker has represented North Carolina's 6th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives since 2015, and in 2017 was elected to head the Republic Study Committee.

The U.S. government shut down at 9:00 p.m. Seattle time after Congress failed to resolve a partisan standoff over immigration and spending.

The shutdown is only the fourth government closure in a quarter-century. It will only partially curb government operations. Uniformed service members, health inspectors, and law enforcement officers are set to work without pay.

Senate leaders offered no obvious solution to reopening the government and engaged in unrelenting finger-pointing during a rare Sunday session in the hours leading up to a vote to end the government shutdown before the workweek began.

Another Senate vote is expected to occur on Monday at 12:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
