PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. — After Graham Elementary School let out, a student's mother was passed out behind the wheel of her car in the parking lot on Monday afternoon, according to the Pierce County Sheriff's Department.
A staff member, who was with the woman's child, knocked on the SUV window several times until the mother woke up. The 33-year-old woman struggled to unlock the door.
When she finally rolled down the windows, the staff member could smell alcohol and took the child back inside the school.
West Pierce Fire & Rescue arrived at the school parking lot after the staff member called 911.
With bloodshot and watery eyes, she tried to leave the parking lot. A crew held her in the back seat as she talked to them with slurred speech, and they then took her to a nearby precinct for a blood alcohol content test.
Her result of 0.466 was almost six times the legal limit, according to deputies. The woman was taken to the hospital, and she was later cited for DUI.
Deputies contacted her spouse, who is currently deployed overseas with the military, and were able to place her child with a family friend.
