Pop star Miley Cyrus tweeted about Seattle’s new mayor in the wake of Jenny Duran’s win for the office.

She tweeted on Tuesday, “Yassss #JennyDurkan ! Last time Seattle elected a woman as mayor was in the '20s & she is an out lesbian determined to do great things! Awesome role model! Congrats!”

Miley's tweet had hundreds of retweets as of Wednesday. Many shared celebratory statements with Miley, but others have used it as an opportunity to voice what they don't like about Durkan's proposals.

It's true that the last time Seattle had a female mayor was nearly 90 years ago. Bertha Knight Landes made history when she won the election for Seattle mayor in 1926 – just six years after the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was passed, giving women the right to vote. Four years later, Landes lost her bid for a second term to Frank Edwards, a former theater operator who didn't even show up to a debate against her.

Fast-forward to the August primary this year, in which Durkan and her contender Cary Moon surfaced to the top over more than a dozen candidates vying for the position.

Durkan took 60 percent in the general election this week, and Moon conceded to her on Wednesday.

Durkan earned her law degree from the University of Washington School of Law and served as U.S. attorney for the Western District of Washington under President Barack Obama from October 2009 through September 2014. She was the country's first openly gay U.S. attorney.

Moon is an urban planner and engineer best known for her activism against the Alaskan Way Viaduct replacement tunnel.

"It's been a great journey," Durkan said after results dropped on Tuesday. "I trust the people of Seattle ... I trust us to show the other Washington how we can put progressive values to work, [and] to show we are a better place than [President] Donald Trump says we are."

Currently, former councilman Tim Burgess is serving as interim mayor after Ed Murray resigned amid sexual abuse allegations earlier this year. The new mayor will take office later this month once results are confirmed, rather than waiting until the traditional time for  taking office in January.
