Police: Downtown Seattle safe after robot investigates suspicious item

Seattle Police Department officers closed major downtown streets near the peak of the morning commute to investigate a suspicious item on Wednesday.

Police closed streets at Union and Pike streets and 5th and 6th avenues around 8:30 a.m. They have since re-opened the streets, but heavy traffic congestion continued in the area.

The area is safe, according to police.

SPD sent its explosive units robot to investigate suspicious item. Police have not released specifics on the item.

The area around Union Street and 5th Avenue is a busy location in downtown Seattle. In addition to people shopping in nearby Westlake and working in office buildings, major bus routes drive around these blocks.
