RENTON, Wash. — One of the most congested commuter routes in the Seattle area could soon see major relief.
Ground is set to be broken on a new flyover bridge Thursday at the I-405/SR 167 interchange in Renton, a heavily traveled area where there are always backups.
The Washington State Department of Transportation is building a new flyover ramp connecting traffic going north off the Valley freeway at about Southwest 23rd Street and getting on I-405 around Benson Road.
The new direct connector will bridge the high occupancy toll lanes on SR 167 to the carpool lanes on I-405.
The goal is to help drivers avoid weaving in multiple lanes of traffic several times and is expected to ease the congestion quite a bit.
This is the first Seattle-area project funded by last summer's gas tax package.
The total price tag is about $116 million dollars and it's set to be completed in the summer of 2019.
Governor Jay Inslee is expected to be at the groundbreaking event, which will start at 9 a.m.
