Girl whose bullying video went viral doing well at new school, parents file claim against district

Nasir Andrews, the little girl whose video about bullying went viral, is now enrolled in fifth grade at another Bellevue elementary school.

Nasir got messages, letters, and emails regarding her video about bullying at Ardmore Elementary, including offers for play dates for local children. One of those little girls attends Cherry Crest Elementary.

Nasir transferred to Cherry Crest Elementary for the 2017-2018 school year and told KIRO 7 it is going well so far.

Her parents filed a tort claim over the summer against the Bellevue School District for "racially motivated 'pack' bullying by her elementary school peers over a period of months".

The claim says the Bellevue School District "failed to adequately respond to the incidents, which resulted in a racially hostile learning environment for Nasir and took a tremendous toll on her emotional and psychological well-being."

Nasir's parents have a list of action items they want the district to take to prevent bullying, they are also asking for $450,000 in monetary compensation for Nasir's emotional damage they say was incurred due to the district's negligence.

After months of telling teachers, administrators and the district, Nasir was feeling desperate and posted a video on Facebook to get help for herself and other students who are bullied.

The video was shared more than 17,500 times and reached more than 670,000 people.

Nasir said other students have called her "Nutella" and "servant".

"A student called me 'Nutella,' and I told my after-school teacher and she said it wasn't racist and she made me write the definition of racist," Nasir told KIRO 7.

Andrews says she was picked on for buying her lunch and laughed at on the school bus. Her parents got her a lunch box and let her bring her lunch some days. They started driving her to school every day.

She said students in her class would take her snack and eat it or throw it away. At recess she says classmates ran away from her. She says she was pushed, kicked and choked.
