Flood watches issued for two rivers ahead of weekend deluge

Flood watches have been issued for the Stillaguamish and Skokomish rivers.

A Flood Watch has been issued for Saturday through Sunday for the Stillaguamish River system in Snohomish County and the Skokomish River in Mason County.

KIRO 7 Pinpoint Meteorologist Morgan Palmer says two to five inches of rain will fall over the weekend along the headwaters of these rivers in the Cascades and Olympics. The rivers could reach minor flood stage by late Saturday but he says significant flooding isn't expected.

Rain will fall over all of western Washington as a low pressure system moves in from the Pacific along a slow-moving frontal boundary draped across the state.  From early Saturday morning through at least midday Sunday, expect rain to be widespread with lowland locations receiving upwards of an inch of rain.

Urban flooding will be a problem in heavier downpours as Thursday night's wind stripped many leaves from trees, which invariably clog up storm drains. Palmer urges people to help out by clearing leaves and debris from storm drains.

He'll be tracking this heavy rain tonight on KIRO 7 at 5-6:30 and at 11 p.m.
