Fireworks barge ready for spectacular Lake Union show

The fireworks barge is in place on Lake Union for a spectacular show.

A team of pyrotechnic experts is busy loading fireworks on a barge on Lake Union for the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance Seafair Summer Fourth.

Western Display Fireworks, of Canby, Oregon, is in charge of the show. Nearly 10,000 pounds of fireworks were shipped to Seattle for the July Fourth show.

The barge is about the size of a football field and Gas Works Park was secured with a 1,500-foot perimeter, where boats are restricted.

The shells are loaded into tubes and blasted into the air. The largest mortar weighs about 30 pounds.
About 20 people are on the barge today, setting up the wood framing and sand that hold the tubes in place and working on the wiring that will make the show in time with the music.

The display is ranked  No. 7 in the Top 10 of the Nation’s Best Fourth of July Fireworks Shows by USA Today.

The #KIRO7 Fourth airs tomorrow night at 9 p.m. on KIRO 7.
