Fire that spread from garage to Auburn apartments was arson

AUBURN, Wash. — A fire that started at a garage next to an abandoned home and then spread to an apartment building was intentionally set, according to Auburn police.

Valley Regional Fire crews were called to I Street Northeast and 22nd Street Northeast at 6:13 a.m. Thursday, where they found a garage burning.

The garage was well involved in flames and had started to spread to a nearby apartment complex. All of the residents evacuated, and no one was hurt.

The fire was quickly knocked down by fire crews.  One unit at the complex was damaged, and the two people who lived there were displaced, but plan on staying with family.

Police said neighbors saw a local homeless woman, who is known to Auburn police, set the fire at the garage. Neighbors called 911 and detained her until police arrived and arrested the woman.

The boarded up home next to the garage has also been involved in at least one fire, but it did not catch fire Thursday.
