Edmonds Madrona school tagged with racial, political graffiti

EDMONDS, Wash. — Karin Butler shared a photo with KIRO 7 that has since gone viral.

The picture shows graffiti with the F-word and the N-word spray painted on the rooftop skylights of her son's classroom at Madrona K-8 School in Edmonds.

Butler said the Images traumatized her son Braedon, a third-grader who she said looked up and saw the graffiti before his teachers did.

“Last night my 8-year-old son had a dream that it was written all over the school,”  Butler said.“He woke up and was so sad."

Edmonds Police took photographs of other parts of the school campus that had also been tagged over the weekend and contained racial slurs and political messages.

School administrators confirmed two other similar incidents happened earlier in the school year, including the N-word written in the boys restroom.

“It’s appalling that this occurred and it was witnessed by students,” said Debbie Joyce Jakala, spokesperson for the Edmonds School District.

According to the Edmonds School District in each of the three incidents police reports were filed but no suspects have been identified.

“We are going to try and continue to find what caused this as well as address concerns some parents are sharing,” Jakala said.

Edmonds police said the school doesn't have surveillance video of the latest graffiti incident. They also said the person responsible could face hate crime charges.
