Reckless driver police say killed a grandmother appears in court

A driver Lakewood police said hit and killed a grandmother while she was walking on the sidewalk appeared in court Thursday afternoon.

According to Pierce County Superior Court documents, David Scott, 43, admitted to driving too fast, losing control of his car and hitting a pedestrian.

Karen McMillion, 68, died instantly. Police believe Scott was going more than 50 mph.

“This is so sad that this had to happen this way,” said McMillion’s daughter, Aleacia McMillion.

Aleacia McMillion said she’s still in shock.

“Nobody should have to lose a parent like this for something so silly. Slow down and stop. There’s no need to run a red light,” she said.

Karen McMillion was walking north on Bridgeport Way Southwest near 86th Street Southwest with her boyfriend Wednesday around 12:30 p.m.

Lakewood police said the vehicle involved in the crash blew through a nearby red light, swerved around a police cruiser and then skidded onto the sidewalk, where it hit Karen McMillion and narrowly missed hitting her boyfriend.

“They were doing the right thing by being on the sidewalk, and when the suspect ran the red light at a high rate of speed, that puts everyone in danger. Here’s two folks trying to enjoy their day, and now we have someone who’s lost their life,” said Lt. Andy Gildehaus, with Lakewood police.

“I’m angry. I hope he gets in big trouble for what happened,” said Aleacia McMillion.

She is pleading with drivers to slow down. She’s now heading into the holidays without her mother.

“She loved her grandchildren. She adored them,” she said. “I just miss her.”

Scott is being held without bail in Pierce County. He’ll undergo a mental health evaluation and be back before a judge later this month.
