Police fire shots on U.S. Capitol grounds after driver tries to hit officers

WASHINGTON — Shots were fired on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday morning, according to multiple reports.

A spokesperson for Washington D.C. police told The Washington Post that authorities were called around 9:30 a.m. for a report of shots fired outside the Rayburn building. The incident happened near the intersection of Washington and Independence avenues.

Capitol Police said a driver struck a police cruiser near 1st and Independence Avenue and tried to run over officers, CBS radio affiliate WTOP reports.

Police say Capitol Hill incident appears to be criminal in nature, with no nexus to terrorism.

A woman was taken into custody.
