Des Moines police searching for burglary suspect

Des Moines police are looking for a burglary suspect who fled into Federal Way.

Police were alerted to the burglary in the 25800 block of Marine View Drive by a woman, after her husband -- who is currently working in Afghanistan -- was watching a stranger in their house via live surveillance video.

Police said he called his wife, who was not at home at the time.

She contacted their neighbor, who is also her landlord.

The victim, Glen Urquhart, the landlord, said, “Stupidly, I grabbed my golf club…I tried to explain to him that I wasn’t going to let him leave. Then he tried to leave, and we fought for about a minute and a half on the front lawn.”

He said his hair was pulled out. He also received minor injuries to his face during the struggle.

Uquhart said the burglar told him, “’I’m sorry, I’m sorry. You know, I got a family. Please won’t you let me go? Won’t you let me go?’”

The burglar then fled in a car and left the area, but not before Urquhart said he smashed the back window with a golf club to make it more easily identifiable. Soon after, police began to pursue the burglar through Redondo.

“Speeds along that boardwalk on the pursuit were over 100 mph, and it’s a two-lane road, and the speed limit’s 25,” said Sgt. Doug Jenkins of the Des Moines Police Department.

At some point, the suspect crashed at First Place Southwest and Dash Point Road in Federal Way. The suspect then ran away.

“Backyards, dead ends, cul de sacs, brushes, anywhere they could possibly look; and we just weren’t able to find the guy,” Jenkins said.

A K-9 team was brought in from Kent to help search for the man, who is described as 6 feet 2 inches tall, mid 40s to late 50s, large build, dark gray ponytail, Hulk Hogan-style mustache and a scar on his left buttock.

At the time this story was published, the suspect was still at large.
