Dense fog impacts morning commute

Heavy fog across Western Washington is affecting the Tuesday morning commute.

The National Weather Service in Seattle issued a Dense Fog Advisory, which is in effect until 11 a.m. for King, Kitsap, Lewis, Pierce, Snohomish and Thurston counties.

Visibility is around a 1/4 of a mile for most of the area.

As of 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, the fog was as heavy as it was on Monday morning, which had ferry delays and a temporary suspension of flights at Sea-Tac Airport.

A crash around 5 a.m. shut down lanes of northbound I-5 in Tukwila.

Washington State Department of Transportation cameras are showing heavy fog along Interstate 5 from the Canadian border down into Lewis County and along Interstate 90 from Seattle to Snoqualmie.

KIRO 7 Pinpoint Meteorologist Nick Allard said the fog will start to lift a bit this afternoon, but a weak system offshore will start to move in.

"As a front approaches, the fog will turn to low stratus by late morning in most spots and will even break up with limited sunshine.  However, high clouds will be overspreading the region, so we might just end up being cloudy in most spots through the day," said Allard.
