Committee OKs more anti-harassment training for senators

OLYMPIA, Wash. — A key Washington state Senate committee has approved annual anti-harassment training for senators and their staff.

The Seattle Times reports the training would be provided around the start of every legislative session. Previously, senators and staff would get training in their first year with sometimes a refresher course in later years.

Tuesday's vote by the Senate Facilities and Operations Committee comes after recent allegations surfaced of sexual harassment involving two ex-House lawmakers.

Last week, more than 170 women including lobbyists and lawmakers signed a letter calling for a culture change at the state Capitol dealing with sexual harassment.

The committee approved posting its harassment policy online. And it also directed the Washington Public Disclosure Commission to provide notice of the Senate policy to lobbyists who register there.
