SEKIU, Wash. — A body recovered in the Strait of Juan De Fuca near Neah Bay Monday is presumed to be that of an overdue fisherman who was staying in Sekiu.
Olympia man Charles L. Swanson, 70, was reported overdue on Friday. After interviewing people at Olson’s Resort, where Swanson had been staying, Clallam County deputies said they concluded that Swanson’s 18-foot boat was last seen midday on Thursday, anchored in the Strait of Juan de Fuca between the mouth of the Hoko Ozette River and Sekiu Point in an area commonly known as “the caves.”
The conditions at that time were reported to have been very rough.
The U.S. Coast Guard launched a search for Swanson using boats and a helicopter, and the Canadian Coast Guard also launched a helicopter to help with the search.
After finding no sign of Swanson or his boat, the search was suspended Sunday morning.
On Monday at 12:47 p.m., Clallam County deputies were called to a report of a body in the Strait of Juan De Fuca near Neah Bay.
Responding deputies said they located the body floating near the rocky shoreline. It was later recovered by the Neah Bay Fire Department and members of Coast Guard Station Neah Bay using boats and jet skis.
The body has yet to be officially identified as Swanson. The Clallam County Coroner’s Office will be working with the King County Medical Examiner’s Office to identify the victim and determine the cause of death.
