City vehicle hits a father and son at a playground in West Seattle

SEATTLE — A 2 year old boy is in the hospital with a fractured skull, and his father has broken bones in his wrist and back, after a city parks vehicle plowed into them at Roxhill Park in West Seattle.

"It was just completely scary and shocking," Eli Wendkos told KIRO 7. "I mean, we're at a playground."

Wendkos said he was at the playground on Sunday afternoon with his kids, 4 year old Amelia and 2 year old Jonah. They were headed for the restroom, Amelia up ahead and Jonah on his dad's shoulders when the pickup hit them. Only Amelia escaped physical injury.

"I hear tires squealing and I look up and I see tires smoking and there's a Parks and Recreation vehicle that jumps the curb coming right at me," Wendkos said. "It hit me, it pinned me against the wall for a few seconds.”

Jonah landed several feet away, crying.

"I couldn't pick him up, which was one of the worst things ever, because of my arm," Wendkos said.

Eli Wendkos' wrist is broken, as is a bone at the base of his spine.

Jonah is in the hospital under observation with a skull fracture, a major concussion and two black eyes.

"The police said that the driver said that he had fallen asleep with the truck in gear," Wendkos said.

Seattle Parks and Recreation sent a statement calling the collision unintentional, and saying it is under investigation.

"We are wishing a speedy recovery to those injured in this incident," the statement reads.

"I don't want to pretend that I know what happened, but it was shocking," Wendkos said.

A spokesman for the Seattle Police Department said media relations officials were out of the office for the day and an incident report was not immediately available.
