DES MOINES, Wash. — Des Moines police are rallying the public to help a young boy with leukemia after a fire destroyed a handful of mobile homes over the weekend in SeaTac, including his.

"Completely tragic. I mean, this family has been through so much already. And now this,” said Sgt. Doug Jenkins with Des Moines police.

Eight-year-old Moses Stevens has been fighting to overcome the cancer for years.

"Imagine having leukemia, and having to go through all of those treatments, and just not feeling well,” said Sgt. Jenkins.

Despite that diagnosis, Moses has found reasons to smile. He can be smiling in photos with Des Moines police, who named him “Chief for a Day.”

He wore the uniform and badge, and rode around in a police car.

His connection to the Police Department is why what happened to his family over the weekend has rattled every officer on the force.

"There was a fire at a local mobile home park, and unfortunately, five mobile homes were destroyed, and Moses and his family lost their home and everything in it,” Jenkins said.

The department is using its Facebook page spread the word about a GoFundMe page to help the family.

"He's a strong young man, he has a good family. And, we know that the family's gonna get through it, but we're gonna help them get through it,” Jenkins said.

If you would like to help, you can drop off gift cards in person at the Des Moines Police Department. You also can donate online here.
